Home Window Repair - Home Repairs

One of the most usual repairs that people do around their houses is on their windows. If you have an idea for a fireplace but you just dont like the odds you are up against, there really is no reason why you cant figure out how to do it for yourself.

The old way of doing things used to be to call the general contractor and get a quote on a project idea you had. But, there was always a risk that the work wouldnt come out looking like the image you had in your mind. Did you communicate your wants as clearly as you possibly could? Its hard to know until you see the finished project.

But if you have a fireplace idea, there is no reason why you have to go through all that. You have the image in your mind. Do your homework and learn how to do it yourself. Thats the only way you are ever going to be completely happy with an idea you have.

Relaxation in the bathroom is greatly enhanced after you install a fireplace. Taking a bath and feeling the warmth while you are hypnotized by the crackling of the fire is a great way to enjoy an evening. But, its not that common to find a fireplace in the bathroom.

That idea and others are just what Im talking about. You can install your own fireplace in your living room. You can create a patio fireplace if you want. There is no limit to how far you can go to enjoy the fireplace experience anywhere you see fit.

The bathroom project took a day after the firebox arrived at the house. I truly believe anyone can have a fireplace anywhere if they just use their imagination and followed through with these great ideas we all get from time to time. Call for help if you need. I really wouldnt want you to destroy your own home if you have absolutely no construction skills at all. But, its worth the time if youd like to give it a try and learn how to do some home improvement projects on your own.

Drywall Texture Tips and Ideas

Drywall texture is a compound that is rolled, sprayed, or troweled onto the sheetrock after the taping and floating of joints is complete. It is the same material as the joint compound, but thinned down with water and applied to the wall surface. There is a lot of variation in styles of texture, and some are more appropriate for certain styles of homes. Here are seven basic types:

Skip Trowel - For this style, texture is applied to the walls with a trowel. Trowel marks may be left on the surface to give a rustic, hand crafted look. It is often seen on Tuscan or old world style homes.

Stamped - The texture may be troweled on first, and then stamped with a tool. The result can be anything - leaves, bird's feet, windmills, etc. Or, a flat brush may be dipped in the texture and stomped on the walls, creating a texture with swirl patterns.

Knock down - Texture is first sprayed on, and allowed to partly dry. Then, a variety of tools may be used to scrape the texture and flatten it down. It is possible to use trowels, sponges, brooms or other tools to scrape or smooth down the texture and create patterns. Monterrey Drag is a type of knock down that imitates an exterior plaster look. In this approach, a thick coating of texture is dragged over with a trowel. This style may be a dust catcher due to the high relief of the mud.

Orange Peel - This is a sprayed texture that leaves a light to heavy splatter on the walls. It resembles the peel of an orange. If done with a fine spray, it can be one of the lightest, least noticeable of the texture styles.

Sand - Sand can added to the texture for a grainy, sandy look. The sandy texture may be sprayed or rolled on. Sand may also be added to paint.

Acoustic - In the 1970's it was common to save the labor cost of floating the ceiling by spraying a heavy texture over the area. This is sometimes referred to as a popcorn ceiling. This style is not in favor today, and frequently homeowners grapple with removal of this heavy texture. This should be done carefully, since some acoustic textures may contain lead or asbestos. Certainly, if these toxic chemical are found, the job should be turned over to professionals. After the texture is removed, the ceiling will need to be re-textured to match the walls.

Smooth - This is a smooth application of texture over the sheetrock wall. It feathers out the sheetrock joints, and creates an even, non-textured wall. This is one of the most expensive and exacting styles. Minor variations will show up as defects, so several stages of sanding and application are needed to create a good job.

Regardless of the wall finish you use, keep in mind that flat paint tends to hide defects and minimize patterns. It gives a matt finish with less emphasis on the wall texture. Reflective paint enhances textures because the light catches the raised surfaces.

Before having wall texture done by professionals, ask to see a sample. The workman's idea of light texture may not be what you had in mind. This is an area where miscommunication often happens. Texture covers a lot of area, and is difficult to remove if you are not happy with the job. Treat it as a long term investment.

Well let me give it to you. 'New' marble becomes 'Old' tumbled marble. Freshly milled stones like quartz and granite, are also purposely 'Aged' to appear 'Old', when in reality are 'New' stones! I am sure that you and I can bring about a few more examples; pointing out to a true sign that we both have been exposed to the same revolution.

What I am driving at is the fact that when following the old styles like Country, Old farm, Grammas, Colonial, Victorian or some old trend, the task ahead has more to do with culture and tradition rather than practicality and purpose.

All that, is fine and acceptable, provided that the 'illusion' of old is done with no traces of fake. Modernizing, maintaining the 'Old Charm Feeling' while we are strolling and stepping through the creaking floors and cramped quarters of some imaginary Tudor with a bit of faded yellow and thousand hands worn out railings, but in the comfort, ampleness and modern advancements as we can afford; crudely put: More like a Hollywood prop which deceives the eye.

Today, everything has become "Out of the Box" The craftsman with his strapped overall and tools on hand fabricating on site, is a thing of the past. In part, it is because of the prohibiting cost of building in place and more importantly by the constraining of time, among others. Let's give way to the PVC's tongue a groove wainscoting, drivit stucco and fenestration with make believe grids. Eclectic, to me means that you're either hiding behind been called 'eclectic' for lack of creativity, or you are so original that very few of us understand the real meaning of your creation (That latter word can be filled in by you, remember you are who will finally have the last deciding one)

The corollary of my rather undefined discourse is just to bring about, in a downright tongue and cheek way, a virtual sense of our acquired tastes, traditions and predilections which surrounds our humanity, and bring to light the invisible walls which separates the many styles, and dole out a bit of comfort to those who are in the mist of renovating their homes, by raising their awareness, to some degree, pointing out to things that they don't know that they know.

Finally my last saying into this subject is: Learn as much as you can, and then put it into practice by been bold, opened to changes, fluid, inspired, creative, happy and never overwhelmed or rushed, never tied up to preconceptions and in a gentle way been able to speak up your mind. Not every renovation/addition project has a great existing building to take inspiration from.Often the portion which is added becomes the stronger design element and therefore influences the rest of the existing home.I don't know if that is the tail waging the dog, but sometimes perhaps the tail should do the waging at least in home design.

Don't Let Your Roof Repairs Go Sky High!

Before you go to the expense of calling in a roofing contractor, see if you can analyze and repair your roof problem yourself. The best possible time to repair your roof problem - is as soon as you realize that you have one and if the weather is calm enough to climb up onto the roof. In fact, this could be further qualified by saying that the best and most economical way to a trouble-free roof, is to inspect the roof regularly, so that you see the problem developing.

A leak from one dislodged tile is a small and inexpensive matter, but if you do not inspect your roof regularly, this will go unnoticed. By the time that you DO notice it, it may be because water is dripping into your spare room! This means that this whole area of the roof structure is soaked, the ceiling will need to be replaced and hopefully the flooring will recover.

Always check your roof after a wind storm, as most roofing is not designed to withstand fierce winds. Scrutinize the tiles for cracks, splits and torn-off corners; also check for lifting. Lifting is a common cause of roof leaks, and can be easily rectified. Be aware of multiple tiles lifting, as this could be a sign that the roofing material is too old and is warping from all the weathering.

Climb into your attic/loft and ensure that any insulation that you have in your roof is not right up against the roof itself. There has to be a gap for air to circulate; also when a roof heats up and there is insulation directly behind it, this heat is thrown back into the roofing and excessive heating like this can damage and warp the roof.

Another weakness in all roofs is the flashing. Flashing is designed to provide a watertight junction between roof materials and structure, especially if the roof projects out or changes design (as with extension roofs). If you are installing a new roof, it is worthwhile to get the flashing 'inspected' as it is a common failure area.

Often the simple fact that the gutters, leading into down pipes from the roof, are blocked with leaves and twigs can cause a problem. Roofs must have adequate run off, especially in the areas which may have snow. Water trapped in the gutter will mean that it will back up the roof for a few inches and have time to seep into the edges of the roofing tiles. Not all homes have adequate perimeter protection on their roofs, although this is one good feature to ask for on a new roof.

Quite often homes incur roof leaks all at the same time (often after strong gales winds and torrential rain etc). This can mean that all contractors are busy and you have 'stop up the leak' until you can get help.

If you do get a leak, and you have placed buckets under the dripping water, be aware that the leak may be in a completely different place than it would seem. Locating the source is difficult, as water can run along horizontal timbers and appear to be leaking from a place that is sound. Getting up into the attic and actually looking for a wet spot on the roof decking will be an accurate way to tell.

If you can find the spot an emergency patch can be made applying roofing felt and using plastic cement to hold it until you can call in a contractor. You can also attempt to repair it yourself, if it is just a shingle that is damaged. You can carefully prize up the roof shingle by removing the three or four nails that are holding it in place; next, apply a generous coating of tar beneath the tear in question, and also coat the underside of the shingle with a with a coat of tar before putting it back in place. Add a spot of tar to each nail head. Most roofing companies advise against the 'liquid' asphalt repair products.

Roofs can also be temporarily repaired using roof membrane and sealants. Care must be taken to clean the roof surface first to ensure that the sealant will stick and keep the leak protected from rain etc. In fact, as long as the roof is clean and dry, the wonder of the 20th. Century - duct tape - can also be stuck onto the roof!

Usually on wall tiles, the first row is set up close to the floor. Mark a horizontal line to make the first course of tiles level. This line should be at a point that allows for cutting tiles to fit below the first course. The easiest way to get the first course straight is to nail a straight board in place horizontally to act as a guide.

Then you need a vertical mark to decide where that first tile goes. Place tiles along the guide board to see how the tiles will be cut to fit on the ends. Move tiles around until you get the best fit. Remember to allow for grout lines.

Getting a solid base and measuring are the keys to getting started with a tile project. Getting the first tile in the right position is the most critical part of a project. It takes some time and some thought, but it isn't hard. Now there are a few tricks that make layout easier. It's especially helpful if you can see the layout done at least the first time you try it.

Mistakes in New Kitchen Design

Every designer and contractor experiences them, a kitchen that they wish would just go away. One small mistake snowballs into a full blown catastrophe, leaving everyone involved yelling at everyone else or maybe only speaking through lawyers. But most of the mistakes that cause such disasters are completely preventable. What follows in this two part article are some mistakes we've seen that you'd do well to avoid.

Cabinet Glazing

This is a process subject to varying results, and not everyone understands that. Basically what happens is this: cabinet manufacturers wipe an already stained door with a darker color paint, filling in all the cracks and crevices. Then they wipe this off, leaving the paint in the gaps and low spots. Sometimes, depending on how heavy the wiping hand was, there are traces of the paint left on the flat parts and each door or cabinet ends up being unique. Even though a set will consist of all the same colors, each cabinet will look a little different from the others. Some people don't understand this. Nowadays cabinet manufacturers make customers and designers sign a disclaimer stating that they understand things will look a little different than the door sample they saw.

Accurate Floor Plan Measurements

It is imperative that these are spot on. Many projects crash and burn because whoever took the measurements was just "pretty close." If measurements are underestimated, things may be ok; there are always filler strips. But if the designer thinks he's working with 6'-3" and there is really only 6'-1 1/2" available, there may be a problem. A workaround might be one smaller cabinet and a filler strip. Replacing a lazy susan corner cabinet farther up the line with a blind corner cabinet, and bumping it out the correct difference, is another idea. It all depends on how creative the designer is with the space kitchen area, and what sort of changes the homeowner can live with.

Remember the Ceiling

Utility cabinets are usually available in 84", 90", and 96". If someone has an 86" ceiling, they're all set, right? Not necessarily. How are they going to tip it into place? More than one screaming match has started over the best way to fit such a monster in a low ceilinged room. Is there another room with higher ceilings you can tip it up in? From there, it might be carried upright to the final resting place somehow, provided there are no low doorways on the way. Some manufacturers let you ship the toe space loose, effectively making it a 91 1/2" (in the case of a 96") cabinets. Once in place you can slip blocks underneath the cabinet up to attach the toe space and toe kick.

So far, I've shown you three problems that can lead to disasters in new kitchens and kitchen remodeling projects. While there are workarounds for each problem, it's best not having them in the first place. Stay tuned for Part II.

Making Roman Blinds For Your Bedroom

Roman blinds can add a nice look to any bedroom and you can give them a custom touch by making them in fabric to match your bedding or other dcor in the room. These blinds are basically a panel of fabric with laths encased in channels and cording to draw up the lathes so it simply takes a bit of sewing know how to make them.

When selecting material for your blinds, go with something that is a medium weight and match the colors to those in your bedroom.

Heres what you need:

Medium weight fabricCurtain lining fabric1/2" wood laths 2 X 1 wood batton to fit across the window Plastic rings Angle brackets Screw eyes Nylon cord Tools such as a square, ruler, pencil, staple gun, cleat and screws

First, measure the window height and width from inside the casing. Cut the roman blinds material 2 " wider and 4" longer than that measurement. Cut the curtain lining fabric the same width as the blinds fabric and 2" longer.

Now you need to decide how many pleats or the size of the pleats. Typically, a roman blind has 6 pleats so youll want to divide the length of your fabric 4" by 12 since 6" pleats would have the channels spaced 12" apart. So, if you are making roman blinds for a window that is 48", you should have cut the fabric to 52" (since you added 4" to the measurement). Then you have to divide the original 48 by 12 (the size of each channel) for a total of 4. So you will have 4 pleats in your blinds.

Mark the lining 1 up from the bottom edge with a hem line and 2 down from the top edge. To mark your channels for the roman blinds, make 2 lines spaced 2 apart starting 6 above the hem line. After you make the first set of line, measure up another 12 and make another set, again spaced 2 apart. Form the channels by bringing the 2 lines together, pinning them and then sewing them to form the channel for the lath.

To assemble the roman blind, put the blind fabric and lining with right sides facing each other and lower edges matching. Stitch the lower edges together. Turn right side out and sew across the blind at the hem line. Pin the lining and roman blind fabric together along the channels and stitch them together. Baste and stitch the sides together, making sure not to stitch up the channels.

To make the pleats in the roman blinds, slip the laths into the channels and slip stitch the openings. Sew the plastic rings on the lining 4" in from the ends of the laths on each side. Cut the 2 pieces of nylon cord twice the length of the blind plus the width. Tie a cord onto each of the bottom rings and thread up through the rest of the rings to the top of the roman blinds and let hang loose.

Now you can hang your masterpieces! Attach the top part to the batton (you can use a staple gun). Now put the angle brackets at the top of the window and attach the batton to the brackets.
Attach a screw eye to the batton on each side above the rows of plastic rings. Thread the loose cord through the screw eyes and over to the right side of the window. Slip a lath into the very bottom of the blind to finish it off.

Viola! Now you have custom Roman blinds for your bedroom!

Common Mistakes With Faux Finishes - House Remodeling Ideas

The elements of faux painting aren't difficult but there's always room for error here and there. Keep these important tips in mind and you're half way there.

1. Your end result is only going to be as good as your materials. That applies to paint and brush quality but above all to your surface. Think of it as your canvas. You're about as likely to achieve your aims on a surface coated with flat paint as you would be painting on tissue paper.

Eggshell or satin base paint is the best undercoat. Faux finishes don't work as well on flat paint surfaces. Paint also needs to dry slowly and flat finishes tend to dry quickly and the scope for fixing mistakes is limited. Finally, underlying flat paint just seems to dull finishes.

2. A few cents of commonsense is worth dollars of equipment. Don't bother with unnecessary gimmicks. Spend your money on quality paints and brushes instead. You don't need a special sponge applicator - almost any soft sponge will do. You don't need an artist's palette. Ice cube trays are cheap and actually hold more paint.

Don't waste that paint! You can always stick it in the freezer rather than letting it harden. Another money-saving tip is to use dishwashing liquid for cleaning brushes. You can buy fancy cleaners but a grease-cutting dishwashing liquid works just fine with water-based paints and with stencil creams, which are partially oil-based.

3. If your surface is pitted or cracked, it will need filling, and sanding when dry. A common error is to assume that that once your faux finish is completed your job is done. Wrong! You MUST seal with water-based sealer before painting, or your wall will look blotchy and diseased. Seal with a color that blends in with the rest of the wall or patches will show through. If you don't have that original paint, mix the sealer with suitably colored acrylic paint to minimize the contrast.

4. You know the saying: oil and water don't mix. Remember that when painting or suffer the consequences. The resulting curdled slush is not pretty. In short, know your paints and read your labels. Latex paint may sound like it's oil-based but it's part-water.

5. Not only is it true that mess is stress, but lack of cleanliness will foul up your finish. You need to clean brushes really well if you don't want previously used colors contaminating your handiwork. Running water and finger massage won't clean properly. That doesn't mean you need expensive professional cleaning pads. Check the kids' department: you can find cleaning pads there at a fraction of the price.

You need to maintain a clean working environment, especially when working for others. Small splashes on carpets can be handled without chemicals. Try nail scissors. Wait until the paint is dry. Adding water just spreads it. Then snip the soiled ends, strand by strand. This won't work on larger patches, so make sure you use drop cloths as a preventative measure. For disasters that can't be trimmed out, try product called Goof Off.

6. When using glazes, wet is the watchword! You need to finish in one seamless session. That means no bathroom breaks (so go before you start!) or refreshment interludes. Wet and dry edges won't mix, the dry glaze won't spread and it will show. Work fast, especially in hot dry climates.

7. You may not recognize your painting style, but everyone has their own unique technique. That's why collaborative efforts don't work. People can work together as long as they work on different layers or walls, not different sections of the same layer/wall. Your style can even change during a day: pre- and post-lunch. Plan your sessions and breaks to maximize uniformity in technique.
